CLOSE COOPERATION RESULTS IN GLOBAL SPACE PROJECTS

"The intersection of increasing know-how with the growing capabilities of the Czech space industry has brought about a revolutionary change in local activities. Now, we have a scientific and technological hotbed in a traditionally industrialised country that does not just want to participate in space missions but to design and implement them itself."

Petr Brož, Department of Geodynamics, Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences

BRNO SPACE CLUSTER

The first cluster in the Czech Republic focused on commercial space was established in 2019. It brings together more than 20 entities from companies and research institutes, mainly from the South Moravian Region. Its members, as well as the cluster itself, successfully participate in European Space Agency projects. In addition to business, it also deals with the popularisation of space technologies and education.

Main activities:

  • Engineering services and cooperation on space projects.

  • Connecting companies collaborating on space projects and creating their own products – commercial and scientific.

  • Popularisation and education – for example, the cluster initiated the Space Applications study programme at the Brno University of Technology.

Experience:

  • Project implementation for ESA, ArianeGroup, OHB, Avio, Leonardo and other significant players in the space industry.

  • The cluster, as an independent entity, submits bids to international tenders.

Space Applications study programme responds to the space industry boom in Brno
The Brno region has a growing number of space industry companies. Scientists and engineers are increasingly participating in European Space Agency (ESA) projects. As a result, the demand for systems engineers with industry knowledge is increasing. So in 2022 the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of Brno University of Technology has created the first Master's degree programme in Space Applications in Czechia. The applications are now open until the end of March 2024.

ESA BIC incubator has been helping #brnoregion startups grow for 5+years
The European Space Agency's business incubator ESA BIC has been supporting Czech startups working with space technologies since 2016. Two years later, this opportunity was offered to emerging companies from the #brnoregion, thanks to the opening of a ESA BIC Brno branch by the innovation agency JIC. In Brno, it has already helped 16 projects develop their first prototype or show the way to market entry. Not surprisingly, this is one the examples of the implementation of a successful strategy to promote entrepreneurship, for which the South Moravian Region and the City of Brno have been awarded the title of European Entrepreneurial Region 2024.
